Seven Sleepers cemetery, Byzantine necropolis near ancient Ephesus, Turkey

Seven Sleepers Cemetery is a grotto complex featuring rock-carved tombs stacked on multiple levels arranged around a central church structure. Ancient inscriptions cover the walls and stone archways define the burial chambers throughout the site.

According to tradition, seven young men sought shelter in this cave during Christian persecution around 250 CE and fell into a deep sleep that lasted centuries. The site became a burial ground and later developed into a pilgrimage destination across different religious communities.

The site holds sacred meaning for both Christian and Islamic believers who recognize the seven sleepers story in their spiritual traditions. Pilgrims from different faiths visit to connect with this shared religious narrative that has resonated across cultures for centuries.

The site is reached by a short walk through hilly terrain south of Selçuk town. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water, as the paths become very hot during summer months.

Excavations uncovered hundreds of clay lamps dating to the 5th and 6th centuries, revealing that visitors regularly came to the site for prayer and rituals over many generations. These lamps suggest a continuous flow of pilgrims who illuminated the chambers during their spiritual visits.
