Lake Gala National Park, National park with two lakes in Edirne Province, Turkey
Lake Gala National Park is a protected area covering wetlands and forests in Edirne Province. The two lakes, Pamuklu and Küçük Gala, lie between the districts of İpsala and Enez and support diverse plant and animal life.
The area received initial protection as a nature reserve in 1991 and was expanded to national park status in 1995. The establishment followed growing concerns about environmental pollution and poaching threatening the region.
The park belongs to the Maritsa Delta Wetland system, which holds international recognition under the Ramsar Convention for protecting essential water bird habitats.
The park is best explored during bird migration periods in April, May, September, and October when wildlife viewing is most rewarding. Designated observation points throughout the area provide good vantage spots for watching birds.
In February 2018, roughly ten thousand flamingos arrived to spend the winter at this location. This surprising gathering indicates shifts in regional bird migration patterns.
