Cyclops cave

Cyclops Cave is an archaeological site near Makri featuring multiple interconnected chambers accessed through a stone entrance. The cave contains a main room connected to smaller spaces, creating a network of passages within the hillside formation.

Evidence from the cave shows human presence spanning from prehistoric times through the Byzantine period, demonstrating long-term occupation of the site. During the Byzantine era, the location functioned as a burial ground for the surrounding community.

The site carries layers of meaning from Greek mythology, where the tale of Odysseus and the Cyclops has been told for thousands of years. Locals and visitors alike connect the physical space to these ancient stories that have shaped how people understand the region.

The site has a wooden handrail guiding visitors along the access path leading to the cave entrance near Makri port. Wear sturdy footwear and visit when daylight is strong to see the interior spaces clearly without additional lighting.

Standing inside the cave, visitors can see across the landscape toward Alexandroupoli and the Ismaro mountains through the main opening. This vista gives a sense of how the location connected those who lived there to the wider surrounding region.
