Yeni Mosque, Komotini

The Yeni Mosque in Komotini is a prayer building with a square hall, single dome, and minaret that combines Ottoman structural forms with Greek neoclassical elements. The interior displays a clear spatial organization typical of Ottoman religious architecture from this period.

The building was constructed in 1585 during Ottoman rule under orders from Ekmekçizade Ahmed Pasha, a senior financial official under two sultans. Its foundation occurred when such religious structures were still being built throughout the region.

The mosque serves as a central prayer space for the Muslim community in Komotini and shapes the religious identity of this region. Visitors can observe how the space functions as a daily gathering place where Islamic traditions remain living and present.

The building stands in central Komotini near the Clock Tower and is easily accessible from main streets. After renovations between 2007 and 2008, the interior is well maintained and open for visitors to enter.

The building preserves the only surviving Iznik tiles from the 1580s in Greece. These ceramics represent the highest quality of Ottoman tile craftsmanship and stand as remarkably rare examples of this art form.
