Dadia Forest, Protected woodland in Evros Regional Unit, Greece.
Dadia Forest is a protected woodland in Evros covering roughly 7,300 hectares, with rolling terrain and elevations reaching 800 meters. The forest combines oak and pine stands that together create a diverse habitat for rare raptors.
The forest was designated as a protected zone to preserve the exceptional concentration of raptor species that has inhabited it over generations. A large wildfire in August 2023 destroyed more than half the forest, marking a significant moment in European woodland history.
The forest maintains a supplementary feeding program for vultures, which visitors can observe from designated observation points 600 meters from feeding areas.
An ecotourism center provides information and organized minibus routes as well as walking trails through the protected area. Visitors should prepare for longer walks and wear sturdy shoes, as the terrain is hilly and sometimes rough.
The woodland harbors 36 of the 38 European raptor species, including all four European vulture species in a single location. This extraordinary bird concentration draws birdwatchers from around the world and makes it a global hotspot for raptors.
