Theater

Theater, Greek theatre at archaeological site in Selçuk, Turkey.

The Theater at Ephesus is an ancient Greek performance venue with three horizontal levels divided by two diazomas and containing sixty-six rows of seats carved into the western slope of Mount Pion. The structure incorporates fifty-eight staircases distributed across all three tiers, allowing people to move efficiently during events and gatherings.

The theatre was originally built during Lysimachos' reign around 250 BCE and later significantly expanded under Roman control to serve a much larger population. These expansions eventually made it one of the largest assembly places in the ancient city.

The stage building displays carved decorations and columns that show the blend of Greek and Roman artistic traditions. These ornamental details reflect the taste and interests of audiences who gathered here for entertainment.

The site is steep and requires comfortable shoes, water, and sun protection since there is little shade throughout the structure. It helps to visit in early morning or late afternoon when light is better and temperatures are more comfortable.

A protective wall was added around the orchestra area in the 4th century CE to shield audiences during wild animal displays and gladiatorial contests. This transformation reveals how the purpose of the space shifted significantly over the centuries.
