Dongshi District, Administrative district in Taichung, Taiwan

Dongshi District is an administrative division in Taichung that stretches across a narrow plain between the Dajia River and the Xueshan Range. The terrain varies in elevation from roughly 300 meters in the lowlands to over 1200 meters in the mountainous areas.

The area took its current form through Taiwan's administrative restructuring in 2010, when it transformed from a township in Taichung County into an official district of Taichung City. This change significantly shaped local governance and infrastructure development.

The area is home to a strong Hakka community whose traditions shape local food, celebrations, and daily customs. Walking through the villages, you notice traditional Hakka houses with their distinctive courtyards and busy markets selling regional specialties.

The region connects through major roads including Provincial Highway 8 and 3 as well as Taichung Special Route 1, making regional travel and transit convenient. It helps to have maps or GPS handy when exploring, since many routes cross varying terrain.

The region is known for producing distinctively shaped pears with a light yellowish-brown textured skin that represent a local specialty. These fruits are often found at village markets and farm stands, forming an important part of the area's agricultural identity.
