Chaotian Temple stands as a major religious site in Beigang, Taiwan, and ranks among the most important Mazu sanctuaries in the country. Its architecture displays several successive halls with curved roofs, timber carvings, and painted wall decorations.
A Buddhist monk named Shubi brought a Mazu statue from Meizhou in Fujian in 1694 and began building the temple in 1700. The compound expanded through several construction phases in the 18th and 19th centuries.
The temple maintains an active Wind Orchestra established in 1928 and hosts the Flying Dragons dance troupe, which performs during religious celebrations throughout the year.
Visitors can take the high-speed rail to Chiayi Station and then connect to regional buses heading toward Beigang. The temple sits in the town center and is easy to reach on foot.
