Singang Shueisian Temple, Chinese temple in Singang, Taiwan.
Singang Shueisian Temple is a Taoist temple in Singang, in the Chiayi County of southwestern Taiwan. It is made up of several halls arranged one behind the other, with a central courtyard, decorated rooftops, and altars in each room.
The temple was founded in 1684, shortly after the first Chinese settlers arrived in the region. It was rebuilt and expanded several times over the following centuries, always remaining the main religious center of the town.
The temple is dedicated to Shuixian Zunwang, a deity associated with water and the wellbeing of the community. During festivals, the courtyard fills with incense, music, and worshippers bringing offerings to the main altar.
The temple is in the center of Singang and easy to reach on foot from the main streets. Moving slowly and quietly through the halls is appreciated, especially when ceremonies are taking place.
Shuixian Zunwang, to whom this temple is dedicated, is a rare deity in the Taoist world and is venerated in only a handful of temples across Taiwan. This god is said to bring together several mythological figures linked to water, including legendary kings and seafarers.
