National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology

The National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology is a government research facility in Longtan District, Taoyuan, working on military and civilian technology projects. The compound includes laboratories, testing grounds, and administrative buildings spread across a secured area divided by security zones.

The facility began operations in 1969 as a military research center during a period of heightened regional tensions. It later transformed into a state-owned enterprise and expanded its scope to include civilian technologies and industrial applications.

The institute maintains scientific collaboration networks with universities and research centers throughout Taiwan, fostering technological innovation.

Access to the compound is highly restricted and requires government authorization requested weeks in advance. Most areas remain closed to the public, and photography is prohibited throughout the grounds.

The institute developed the jet engines for a domestic supersonic trainer aircraft in less than ten years. The facility also operates wind tunnels and simulation equipment used for civilian aerospace projects.
