Taoyuan Hakka Culture Hall, Cultural center in Longtan, Taiwan
Taoyuan Hakka Culture Hall is a cultural center in the Longtan district of Taiwan devoted to the Hakka community. It brings together exhibition rooms, classrooms, and meeting halls all under one roof.
The center opened in 2007 as part of a broader Taiwanese initiative to protect the cultures of ethnic minorities. It was established at a time when the Hakka community in Longtan was still closely tied to local rural life.
The exhibitions show Hakka textiles, kitchen tools, and handmade everyday objects that were once used in the home. Visitors can also attend workshops where traditional techniques such as cloth dyeing are still demonstrated today.
The center sits in the heart of Longtan and is easy to reach by public transport or by car. It is worth checking in advance whether a temporary exhibition is on, as this can add a lot to the visit.
The building was designed to evoke a traditional Hakka roundhouse, even though such structures are not native to this part of Taiwan. This architectural form comes from the Hakka homeland on the Chinese mainland and was deliberately chosen as a reference to their origins.
