Lianzuo Mountain Guanyin Temple, Buddhist temple in Daxi, Taiwan
Lianzuo Mountain Guanyin Temple is a Chinese temple in Daxi, Taiwan, featuring a pavilion flanked by stone lions and an octagonal ceiling built with layered wooden brackets. The building follows a linear plan with five entrances leading to a single main hall.
The temple was founded in 1797 by local residents who saw in the hillside a shape recalling the lotus pedestals that support Buddha figures. It was rebuilt and expanded several times, with major renovation work completed in the late 20th century.
People from Minnan and Hakka communities cross county lines to pray here to Guanyin and the Gods of the Three Realms, making it a meeting point for different local traditions. Offerings of incense and fruit are a common sight in front of the main altar throughout the day.
The temple is open throughout the day and is best visited in the early morning or late afternoon when it tends to be quieter. The approach involves steps, so comfortable shoes are a good idea.
The five-entrance layout with a single hall arranged end to end is uncommon among Taiwanese temples, where multiple side-by-side halls are the norm. This configuration gives the interior an unusually direct and uninterrupted line of sight from front to back.
