Sicao Dazhong Temple, Chinese temple in Annan District, Tainan, Taiwan
Sicao Dazhong Temple is a Chinese temple in Annan District, Tainan, and stands out for its eight hand-carved dragon columns at the entrance. The walls feature detailed dragon and tiger carvings on opposite sides of the building.
Construction began in 1699 during the Qing Dynasty's Kangxi reign, honoring General Chen Tze who fought against Dutch forces. This military leader later became Marshal of the Sea and left a lasting impact on the region.
The temple honors Dazhong Yeh, a protective deity for the area, while also housing shrines to Guanyin, Mazu, and the goddess of fertility. This mix of deities shows how different people brought their own prayers and hopes to the site over time.
The temple sits on Dazhong Road in central Annan and is freely accessible during the day. Both indoor and outdoor seating areas are available, making it easy to spend time there comfortably.
An ossuary behind the temple holds remains from the Battle of Baxemboy and ties the place to a significant military conflict. This quiet memorial often goes unnoticed by visitors but reveals much about the site's deeper importance.
