Penghu Great Bridge, Road bridge in Penghu County, Taiwan
The Penghu Great Bridge is a road bridge that stretches over three kilometers, linking the islands of Xiyu and Baisha in the archipelago. The roadway runs low over the water and allows open views on both sides, where the waves of the Taiwan Strait wash against the concrete piers.
The structure opened in 1970, replacing the ferries that had been the only link between the two islands. Its completion shortened travel time sharply and allowed a direct road connection through the archipelago for the first time.
The name reflects the role this structure plays in linking two communities that once relied entirely on boats to move between them. Today travelers and locals cross it daily, many stopping along the edge to gaze at the open sea or take photos against the expanse of water.
Crossing the structure takes only a few minutes, but many visitors stop along the roadside to take in the view of the open water. Strong wind is common in this area, so cyclists and pedestrians should be cautious, especially in poor weather.
The bridge runs so low over the sea that drivers and passengers feel as if they are gliding directly above the waves. On some days, when the weather is clear, you can see fishermen on small boats near the piers searching for fish and seafood.
