Zhonghe Yuantong Temple, Buddhist temple in Zhonghe District, Taiwan
Zhonghe Yuantong Temple sits on Baijie Mountain at 180 meters above sea level, with stone walls built from local mountain rocks. The compound contains several temple buildings arranged on the hillside, reflecting traditional Buddhist temple design.
Construction of the temple began in 1926 under Lin Miaoing's leadership and continued for several decades under successive abbesses. This extended building period allowed the site to develop gradually into its present form.
The main hall blends architectural styles from the Tang Dynasty with Japanese design elements, visible in the intricate dragon carvings on stone pillars and ceremonial bells. This fusion of traditions reflects the temple's role as a meeting point between different cultural influences.
Public buses serve Zhonghe Station, from where a walk of approximately 1.3 kilometers (0.8 miles) along Yuantong Road leads to the temple. This walk takes time but offers a chance to enjoy the surrounding landscape.
Red plum blossoms flower on the temple grounds between late January and early February, creating a striking winter display. During these months, the blooming trees form a visual contrast against the stone structures of the compound.
