Jinheng bridge, Bicycle and road bridge in Taroko National Park, Taiwan
Jinheng bridge is a concrete and road bridge in Taroko National Park that spans 82 meters across the Ludan River and connects both sides of Provincial Highway 8. The 11-meter-wide structure allows vehicles and bicycles to reach the Swallow Grotto trail and several viewing points.
The original structure built in 1960 and known as Bailong Bridge collapsed during Typhoon Amber in 1997 and was reconstructed with reinforced materials in 2003. The rebuild demonstrates efforts to maintain critical mountain connections despite extreme weather conditions.
The bridge takes its name from Jin Heng, an engineer of the Cross-Island Highway who lost his life during a post-earthquake inspection when rocks fell on him. His name serves as a reminder to visitors of the human cost involved in building infrastructure through these challenging mountains.
The bridge provides safe passage for cars and bicycles on Provincial Highway 8 and works well for visitors hiking to the Swallow Grotto Trail or stopping for photos. Access is available any time since it sits on the main road.
The location was previously known as Bailong Bridge before its name was completely replaced by Jin Heng to honor the fallen engineer. This change represents how mountain infrastructure became tied to personal memory rather than simple description.
