拉灣橋, Beach footbridge in Taitung County, Taiwan.
Lawan Bridge is a concrete footbridge with eight arches that connects the mainland coast to Sanxiantai Island, featuring a curved dragon-like design along its path. The structure spans across the water and creates a pedestrian walkway linking both sides.
The bridge opened in 2013 and created the first permanent walking connection to Sanxiantai Island, which has appeared on maps since the 18th century. This project marked a major shift in how people could access the island.
The name Sanxiantai refers to three large rock formations on the island that hold meaning in local beliefs and storytelling. You can see these distinctive stones as you walk across, which helps explain the cultural connection to this place.
The walkway is open during daylight hours, and visiting early in the day or late afternoon avoids peak crowds. Wear sturdy shoes since the surface can become wet and slippery, especially on windy days or when sea spray reaches the bridge.
The eight sections curve in a fluid wave-like pattern that creates the impression of a dragon in motion when viewed from certain angles. This effect is more noticeable from offshore or above than when walking on the bridge itself.
