太平文衡殿, Taoist temple in Taitung, Taiwan
Taiping Wenheng Temple is a Taoist sanctuary in Taitung featuring three connected halls with upturned roofs and traditional Minnan architectural design. The structures display detailed stonework and painted wooden elements throughout, reflecting the craftsmanship of earlier generations.
The temple traces its origins to 1918 when three residents brought a statue of Guan Gong from Tainan and initially kept it in a private home. Growing devotion led over the decades to the construction of the current temple with its three connected halls.
The temple comes alive during the birthday celebration of Guan Gong on the 24th day of the sixth lunar month, when worshippers gather to pray and make offerings. The interior spaces reflect local religious practices through decorated altars and devotional elements that remain visible year-round.
The temple provides ample parking on-site and is easily accessible by public transportation for a convenient visit. Opening hours are regular, allowing visitors to plan ahead without worrying about unexpected closures or long waits.
The temple houses a rare statue of the White Monkey Marshal, a deity linked to the legendary protection of Sun Bin. Few other Taiwanese temples display representations of this lesser-known yet historically important divine figure.
