Moving Castle, Four-story residential building in Taitung City, Taiwan
Moving Castle is a four-story residential building in Taitung City, built from reclaimed materials such as wood, bricks, and glass. Its white exterior features tower-like structures that rise above the roofline, and the property includes a small garden visible from the street.
Lee, a former soldier who came to Taiwan after the Chinese Civil War, spent over thirty years building this structure by himself. The project was his way of putting down roots in a place that had become his permanent home.
The white towers and curved shapes remind many visitors of houses seen in Japanese animation, especially Studio Ghibli films. People often stop on the sidewalk to photograph the facade, treating it as a pop culture reference brought into the real world.
The building is located in a residential neighborhood of Taitung City and is easy to reach on foot, with the white towers making it recognizable from nearby streets. It is private property, so visitors should stay on the public sidewalk and be mindful of the people who live there.
A typhoon caused serious damage to the building after it was finished, forcing Lee to carry out extensive repairs on his own. That episode made the structure not just a construction project, but also a story of repeated personal effort.
