Liyu Mountain, Natural landmark in Taitung County, Taiwan
Liyu Mountain is a low hill located in Jian Township, Taitung County, on the east coast of Taiwan, rising to about 75 meters and overlooking the East Longitudinal Valley. Several marked walking paths wind around the summit and connect viewpoints from which the surrounding farmland and distant ridgelines are visible.
The area around Liyu Mountain was developed during the Japanese colonial period in the early 20th century, when Jian Township was formally established as a planned settlement. That period left a visible mark on the layout of several nearby villages, some of which still follow a grid pattern introduced at that time.
The area around this hill sits within a region home to several indigenous communities, including Amis and Bunun groups, whose presence shapes the character of nearby villages. Local markets in the surrounding towns sell hand-forged knives and woven textiles that reflect traditions still practiced in the area today.
The paths around the hill are clearly signed and have resting spots along the way, making it easy to go at your own pace. Some sections are steeper than they look from the base, so sturdy shoes are a practical choice before you start.
At the foot of the hill lies Liyu Lake, where fireflies appear each year from late April through early June and can be seen flickering between the trees after dark. This natural display draws visitors specifically to the lakeside each evening during that short window.
