Soulangh Cultural Park, Cultural center and museum in Jiali District, Taiwan
Soulangh Cultural Park is a cultural center and museum in Jiali District, southern Taiwan, built on the grounds of a former sugar factory. Fourteen old warehouses on the site have been converted into galleries, studios, a library, and spaces for creative workshops and artist residencies.
The sugar factory on this site was founded in 1906, during the period of Japanese colonial rule, and ran for nearly a century. When it closed, the factory grounds were transformed into a cultural park, keeping the original buildings while opening them to art and community use.
The galleries focus on folk art and the traditions of the Siraya, the indigenous people of this part of Taiwan. Walking through the spaces, visitors can see how these roots are reflected in the work of artists active today.
The paths between the warehouses are clearly laid out and easy to walk, making it simple to move from one space to the next at your own pace. It is worth setting aside a good part of the day, as the buildings and outdoor areas spread across a large site.
Artists from different countries live and work on-site in workshops dedicated to traditional crafts such as blacksmithing and ceramics. Their work runs alongside the public exhibitions, so visitors sometimes get to watch someone in the middle of making something by hand.
