Green Island

Lyudao Township is a district on a volcanic island in the Pacific Ocean off Taiwan's eastern coast, belonging to Taitung County. The island comprises three coastal villages, a network of roads running around the rim, and several natural attractions including coral reefs and thermal springs of volcanic origin.

The area was formerly inhabited by Amis people before becoming an outpost during Japanese colonial rule and later receiving a prison facility for political detainees. The administrative district gained its current official status and name after the Nationalist government's reorganization in 1949.

The name Green Island replaced the earlier expression Fire Burned Island, which referred to volcanic activity, and now contributes to the identity of the local community. Fishermen and visitors share the small harbors along the coast, where boats and dive schools line up side by side.

Flights from Taitung Airport and ferry services from Fugang Harbor provide regular connections, with the crossing taking roughly 50 minutes and flights being shorter. Scooters are the most common way to get around once on the island, as the roads allow a circular journey around the entire area and most sites are easily reachable.

Zhaori offers one of only three saltwater thermal baths worldwide, where volcanic heat warms ocean water naturally to bathing temperature. The springs lie right on the rocky shoreline, so the pool fills with fresh saltwater at high tide.
