原國防部綠島感訓監獄

The original detention facility on Green Island held political prisoners from 1951 to 1965 during Taiwan's military rule. Today the grounds contain the preserved prison buildings, gardens, and monuments spread across the site for visitors to walk through.

The prison began operating in 1951 as a detention center for political prisoners during Taiwan's martial law period. It served as one of the places where the government held people suspected of political opposition.

The site tells stories of ordinary people through their personal belongings and documents from that oppressive period. Walking through, you encounter individual lives and understand how political imprisonment affected families and communities.

The site sits on the island and welcomes visitors daily with free entry to all areas. Walking paths connect the different sections, and information signs help you navigate through the buildings and monuments.

The island was deliberately chosen as a prison location because its isolation made escape nearly impossible. This geographic feature was a critical part of how the authorities controlled political prisoners during that era.
