Sintung Sugar Factory, Historic sugar factory in Donghe, Taiwan
Sintung Sugar Factory is a former production facility in eastern Taiwan with preserved structures built from pebbles, steel beams, and driftwood. The site now includes a bed and breakfast, handicraft shops, and a coffee house for visitors.
The facility was built during Japanese rule in Taiwan and operated for sugar production until 1991. It received historic building status in 2002.
Artists have transformed the former industrial site into working studios and galleries where visitors can see creative work on display. This shift has given the location a new identity focused on contemporary artistic expression.
The site is best explored on foot and all areas are easily accessible to walk through. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes and allow time to stroll through the various exhibition spaces and studios.
The site hosts regular live concerts and dance performances within the preserved industrial buildings. These events create an interesting blend of history and contemporary performance art.
