Old Donghe Bridge, Historic bridge in Chenggong, Taiwan.
The Old Donghe Bridge is a concrete structure crossing the Mawuku River that connects Chenggong Township with Donghe Township. Its design features different foundation types at each end, with limestone soil supporting the north side and softer sedimentary rock beneath the south.
The structure was built in 1926 during Japanese colonial rule under the name Jikuen Bridge. It was reconstructed in 1953 after typhoon damage, with engineers maintaining the original height of its support towers.
The bridge serves as a tangible link between two communities and represents how engineering shaped local connections. Walking across it, visitors can sense its role in the daily lives of residents who once relied on it as their main crossing point.
Visitors can walk across this pedestrian-only bridge to observe the different geological conditions it crosses. Starting from the higher end gives a better view of the contrasting pier designs on each side.
The bridge displays two completely different pier designs: an arch-shaped support on the Chenggong side and a framed pier on the Donghe side. This mixed construction approach reveals how engineers adapted to local soil conditions.
