小馬隧道, Historic road tunnel in XinYi Village, Taiwan.
Xiao Ma Tunnel is a passage carved through mountains that links different areas of the region. It was built in the 1930s using stone and traditional construction methods that remain visible today.
This passage was completed in 1932 and greatly improved transportation connections across eastern Taiwan. The construction allowed previously isolated communities to trade and travel more easily with each other.
The tunnel structure represents early 20th-century Taiwanese infrastructure development, combining practical transportation needs with architectural elements of the period.
You can visit during daytime hours and read information boards explaining the history and construction. The area around the entrance is easy to access, and a quick walk through takes only a few minutes.
The inner walls still display the hand-carved stones from the original construction. This type of crafted stonework is seldom seen in tunnels built today and represents a vanished building tradition.
