Yevpatoriia is a coastal town on the western shore of Crimea in Ukraine, extending for several kilometers along the Black Sea. The area around the town includes numerous health resorts, salt lakes, and sandy beaches that are used by holidaymakers and visitors.
Greek settlers founded the colony of Kerkinitis around 500 before Christ on this coast, which later became a trading post. In medieval times the place transformed into a Turkish fortress named Kezlev, before the area came under Russian control.
The Juma-Jami Mosque from 1564 was designed by Mimar Sinan and has served for centuries as a place for prayer and gatherings along the coast. Its multiple domes still shape the townscape today and draw visitors who wish to experience Ottoman architecture in Europe.
The beaches and health resorts are most accessible during the warm months, when the seawater reaches comfortable temperatures. Those wishing to visit the salt lakes and therapy centers will find them mainly along the western coastline of the town.
The Tekie Dervishes complex is the last remaining Sufi monastery from the Ottoman period on the peninsula. Its structure and interior rooms offer insight into the spiritual practices of the dervishes who once lived here.
