Євпаторійська дитяча залізниця, railway line in Russia
The Євпаторійська дитяча залізниця was a children's railway in the coastal city of Yevpatoriya on the Crimean Peninsula. It operated a short 4.6-kilometer route along the Moydnak salt lake with two stations and a passing loop where trains could change direction.
The railway was built in the late 1980s to introduce children to railway operations. It operated for three years until November 1991, when it closed due to environmental concerns affecting the nearby salt lake ecosystem.
The railway reflects Soviet-era educational traditions where children learned practical skills through hands-on experience. Today, families visit to connect with this teaching approach and remember how such places shaped local childhood memories.
The site of the former railway can be visited today as an asphalt path that follows the old route. The path is flat and wide, making it easy to walk and explore the remains of the line and the surrounding area.
What made this railway special was that children could actually operate the locomotives themselves under adult supervision. This hands-on experience gave young visitors a rare and direct understanding of how trains worked.
