Korostyshiv, city of Ukraine
Korostyshiv is a town in Zhytomyr Oblast, Ukraine, sitting along the Teteriv River in a region of mixed forests and granite outcrops. The center holds churches of different architectural styles and an outdoor sculpture park with works by local and visiting artists.
The town came under the influence of the Olizar family, Polish nobility who owned the land from the 1600s and commissioned the first Baroque churches. Over time, some of those buildings were rebuilt in a classical style, leaving a mix of periods visible in the architecture today.
The churches and monuments in the center still show the influence of Polish noble families who once owned the town. Baroque details and later classical elements appear side by side on the same buildings, giving the streets a layered look.
The center is compact enough to walk through, with the churches and the sculpture park close to each other. The natural spots along the Teteriv River, including waterfalls and a granite quarry, sit outside town and are easier to reach by car.
For a town of its size, Korostyshiv holds an unusually large number of outdoor sculptures, more than most comparable towns in Ukraine. Many of these works were created on site during festivals where artists came to work and left their pieces behind permanently.
