Main Astronomical Observatory of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Astronomical observatory in Holosiiv district, Kyiv, Ukraine.
The Main Astronomical Observatory is a research facility in the green southern part of Kyiv operated by the National Academy of Sciences. The grounds include several observation domes, various telescopes ranging from small to large instruments, and laboratory buildings set among trees and open areas.
This research facility was founded in 1944 and opened officially in 1949 under the guidance of scientist O.Ya. Orlov. It has since developed into a center for astronomical studies and celestial observation.
The on-site museum displays historical telescopes and scientific instruments that show how astronomical observation has evolved over time. The exhibits connect older equipment with explanations of current research methods.
Guided tours can be arranged Monday through Friday, and evening telescope viewing is available when groups of five or more people visit. It is best to arrange your visit in advance and come as part of a group to ensure you can see through the telescopes.
A minor planet was named Holosyeyevo in honor of this facility, and several moon craters bear the names of scientists who worked here. These tributes reflect the international importance of the research conducted at this location.
