Sasyk Lagoon, lagoon in Odesa Region, Ukraine
Sasyk Lagoon is a large coastal water body along the Black Sea in Odesa Oblast. The basin is separated from the sea by a narrow sandy barrier and contains both freshwater and saltwater sections depending on the area.
The lagoon formed through natural coastal processes and was altered in the early 1900s when canals were built to connect it with the sea. These water engineering works significantly changed the ecosystem.
The best access is via paths along the sandy barrier that separates the lagoon from the sea. The area is relatively flat and open, making it easy to walk around and observe the water.
The lagoon is a protected wetland of international importance and attracts large numbers of migratory birds. Birdwatchers come here to observe dozens of species, especially during migration seasons when the skies are filled with activity.
