Mlyniv, Administrative settlement in western Rivne Oblast, Ukraine.
Mlyniv is an urban-type settlement in western Rivne Oblast, Ukraine, lying along the Ikva River in the Mlyniv Raion. It has a small town center with residential streets, public buildings, and local services grouped within walking distance of each other.
Mlyniv grew from the 16th century as part of the Volhynian region, passing through Lithuanian and then Polish rule before becoming part of the Soviet Union in the 20th century. The construction of a hydroelectric station on the Ikva brought lasting changes to the shape of the settlement.
The name Mlyniv comes from the Ukrainian word for mill, pointing to how the Ikva River once powered daily work in the area. Walking along the river today, you can still get a sense of how central water was to life here.
The settlement is compact and easy to get around on foot, with most public buildings and services within a short walk of the center. Visiting in the warmer months makes it easier to walk along the Ikva and explore the surroundings.
Archaeological finds along the Ikva suggest that Ruthenian communities already lived here during the first millennium before Christ. This makes the area one of the few in the region with such a long record of continuous human presence.
