Stepan Bandera monument in Lviv, Bronze and granite monument in Lviv, Ukraine
The Stepan Bandera monument stands at Kropyvnytskogo Square in Lviv and shows a bronze figure in front of a tall granite pillar. The pillar reaches 30 meters (about 100 feet) in height and is flanked by four smaller supports arranged geometrically around the central structure.
The memorial was unveiled on October 13, 2007, and came into being after years of discussion about public monuments in Ukraine. Its construction sparked debates about memory and commemoration that continue today.
The site's name honors a divisive figure in Ukrainian history whose legacy remains debated to this day. Visitors often notice the changing flowers and candles that people leave here.
The site sits centrally at the square and is easily reached on foot, with the area around the monument level and accessible for wheelchairs. Information panels in several languages stand near the pillar.
Two capsules containing soil from Bandera's birthplace and burial site were embedded in the foundation during the opening ceremony. This gesture aimed to create a symbolic connection between different places in his life.
