Ivan Franko Park, Historic park in central Lviv, Ukraine
Ivan Franko Park is a green space covering about 11.6 hectares in front of the main building of Ivan Franko National University, featuring mature trees throughout its grounds. The layout includes a network of pathways, several monuments, and dedicated areas designed for children and people with dogs.
The park began in the 16th century as a private garden owned by the Scholz-Wolfowicz family. It was transformed into a public space during the reign of Emperor Joseph II and has remained an important part of the city since then.
The park is named after the celebrated Ukrainian writer Ivan Franko, and several monuments within it tell stories connected to Ukrainian literature and culture. Visitors walking through notice how these memorials reflect the importance of this figure to the local identity.
The park can be entered from several locations, primarily from Sichovykh Striltsiv Street and the surrounding areas. Wear comfortable shoes since the terrain varies with some hills, and walking is the best way to see everything at a relaxed pace.
The park contains unusual tree species rarely seen in Europe, such as tulip trees, Manchurian aralia, and catalpa trees. Several of the oak trees here are over 300 years old and serve as silent witnesses to the park's long history.
