Митрополичі сади

The Metropolitan Gardens at St. George Cathedral consist of three terraced levels that surround the cathedral structure with stone retaining walls throughout. The space includes decorative landscaping features arranged across the sloped terrain of the site.

The gardens were created between 1762 and 1771 near the Greek Catholic Metropolitan residence as the church's authority grew in the region. Stone fencing was added in 1772 to define the boundaries and secure the area.

The gardens serve as a burial ground for leaders of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church whose tombs visitors can encounter while walking through the grounds. This role makes the space a place of religious remembrance and spiritual significance for the community.

The site is walkable with multiple staircases connecting the different terrace levels, so wear comfortable shoes to navigate the slopes. Plan time to move slowly between the elevated sections as you explore the full grounds.

A grotto-shaped gazebo designed by K. Fesinger sits in the gardens and offers an unusual shelter point with character. The cathedral tower holds one of the nation's oldest bells, making it a historically significant musical piece.
