Pervomaisk extends along the banks of the Luhan River, with six coal mines and industrial facilities covering the urban landscape.

The settlement emerged in 1765 as Aleksandrovka village, later transforming into Petro-Maryevka before receiving its current name in 1920.

Local residents maintain communal food distribution centers, providing sustenance to approximately 20,000 inhabitants who remained in the city.
