Yaroslav's City, Medieval fortified settlement in central Kyiv, Ukraine.
Yaroslav's City is a medieval fortified settlement in central Kyiv, once enclosed by defensive walls, gates, and towers across a large portion of today's city center. Its remains and reconstructed structures now sit across several city blocks, connecting sites such as Saint Sophia Cathedral and the Golden Gate.
Prince Yaroslav the Wise had the settlement built in 1037 as an expansion of the existing city, commissioning churches, monasteries, and a fortified gate as part of its layout. Over the following centuries, parts of the complex were destroyed and others were rebuilt or covered by later construction.
The Golden Gate is a reconstructed city gate that visitors can enter and explore from the inside. It contains a small chapel with mosaic decoration, giving a direct sense of how the medieval structure once looked and functioned.
The main sites are in central Kyiv and can be explored on foot, with a short walk between each point. It is worth setting aside a good few hours to visit the key structures at a comfortable pace.
Saint Sophia Cathedral is the only structure from the original complex that has survived largely intact, with its 11th-century mosaics and frescoes still in place on the interior walls. These were never fully replaced or repainted, making them among the oldest surviving examples of their kind in Eastern Europe.
