Lanchyn, Urban settlement in Nadvirna Raion, Ukraine.
Lanchyn is an urban-type settlement in Nadvirna Raion, in the Carpathian foothills of western Ukraine. It sits in a valley surrounded by forested hills and small streams, with several smaller villages nearby.
Lanchyn was granted urban-type settlement status in 1925 as part of Soviet administrative reforms that created a category between village and town. After Ukrainian independence, this classification was gradually reviewed alongside changes to local governance across the country.
The settlement center serves as a meeting point for people from nearby villages, and small markets bring together locals on a regular basis. Walking through the streets, visitors notice a mix of older wooden houses and more recent buildings side by side.
Getting to Lanchyn is easiest by private car, as public transport connections in this part of the Carpathians are limited. Those planning to explore the surrounding villages should allow extra time, since roads between communities tend to be winding and slow.
Despite holding urban-type status, Lanchyn looks and feels much like a small mountain village, with no visible urban infrastructure to set it apart. This category was created in Soviet times largely to distinguish settlements with small industrial activity from purely farming villages, a difference that is now barely noticeable on the ground.
