Петровская крепость, Military fortress in Novopetrivka, Ukraine
Petrovska fortress is a military fortification in Novopetrivka built with four interconnected citadel complexes that included towers, gun openings, powder stores, soldier barracks, a medical ward, and a church. The surviving sections show how these different parts fit together as one defensive system.
Built between 1770 and 1774 on orders from Catherine II, it became part of a defensive line along the Dnieper River against raid threats. The fortress served its purpose for decades before gradually falling into disuse.
The fortress displays how military engineers and local builders worked together, creating fortifications that reflect practical methods from the 18th century. Walking through the remains, you can see how the structure was designed to protect people and serve as a working garrison settlement.
Visit during daylight hours to see the structures clearly, as you can walk around freely to explore all the different sections. The nearby town of Novopetrivka has shops, markets, and medical facilities if you need supplies or assistance.
In 1854, the fortress came under cannon fire from French forces, the only real combat it ever experienced in its entire history. This event shows the site remained strategically important long after it was first built.
