Passage, Art Nouveau hotel in Odesa, Ukraine
The Passage is a four-story building in Odesa containing a luxury hotel and retail spaces, with sculptures of Mercury and Fortune adorning its facade. A glass-covered gallery inside connects two parallel streets and features multiple copies of the same statues.
The building was completed in 1900 after being commissioned by merchant Moisey Mendelevich and arrived equipped with modern features such as electric lighting and steam heating. It has shaped the character of the city center for generations.
Before the Bolshevik revolution, the Passage was a central meeting place where Odesa's wealthy gathered to shop at premium retailers and stay as guests.
The hotel sits at the corner of Derybasivska and Preobrazhenska streets and offers 25 rooms looking out over central Odesa or the interior courtyard. The central location gives easy access to shops and sights in the old city.
The building displays multiple copies of Mercury and Fortune statues that decorate not only the exterior but also appear throughout the glass corridor inside. These repeated figures symbolized commerce and prosperity, themes central to the building's original purpose.
