Slovo Building, Residential building in Shevchenkivskyi District, Kharkiv, Ukraine
The five-story Slovo Building on 9 Kultury Street features 66 apartments and follows a distinctive C-shaped architectural layout with five entrances.
The building, completed in December 1929, became a residence for writers and artists until 1933 when Soviet authorities initiated mass arrests of its inhabitants.
The structure represents a combination of modernist and constructivist architectural styles, designed by architect Mykhailo Dashkevych for the Writers' Union members.
The building contains three to four-room apartments on each floor, with several entrances equipped with electric elevators and a rooftop space for sunbathing.
Forty out of sixty-six apartments in the building experienced arrests during the 1930s, leading residents to refer to it as 'The Crematorium'.
