Театр Бергоньє, Theater building at Chykalenka Street, Kyiv, Ukraine

The Bergonye Theater occupies a two-story stone building featuring French Renaissance architectural details where two streets meet. The structure displays decorative elements that give it visual distinction among surrounding buildings in central Kyiv.

Auguste Bergonyé, a French businessman, created a wooden circus structure in 1868 and replaced it with a stone building in 1875. The site gradually evolved into a significant venue for dramatic performances and became a central cultural location in Kyiv.

This venue became a gathering place for Kyiv audiences seeking dramatic performances from Ukrainian and Russian acting companies. The stage shaped how people in the city experienced theater and connected with contemporary artistic expression.

The building now houses the Lesya Ukrainka National Academic Drama Theater with regular performances in central Kyiv. Visitors should know the theater sits along a street and operates as an active venue with changing programs.

In 1897 this location became one of the first places in Kyiv to show films regularly while also maintaining stage productions. The combination of these two entirely different forms of entertainment was unusual for that era.
