Founded on 16 March 1918 in Kyiv by order of the Ukrainian People's Republic government as the Ukrainian Telegraph Agency, it was led from June to November 1918 by Dmytro Dontsov, who also headed the Bureau of Ukrainian Press at 25 Khreshchatyk. Renamed UkROSTA in 1920, it became RATAU in 1921, was subordinated to TASS in 1925, took the name Ukrinform in 1990, and was granted national status in 2000.
Ukrinform's name combines "Ukrainian" and "inform"; the agency has carried it since 1990, when RATAU was renamed. Its press centre on Bohdana Khmelnytskoho Street hosts briefings and round tables with ministers, diplomats and artists, and its FREEДОМ channel broadcasts in Russian with a focus on the Russo-Ukrainian War.
