Pedagogical Museum, Educational museum in Volodymyrska Street, Kyiv, Ukraine.
The Pedagogical Museum is housed in a neoclassical building at 57 Volodymyrska Street in central Kyiv, next to Taras Shevchenko National University. The collection covers manuscripts, rare books, documents, photographs, and teaching materials that trace the history of education in Ukraine.
The building was designed by architect Pavlo Alyoshyn and completed in 1911, then used as the headquarters of the Central Council of Ukraine after the 1917 revolution. It later became home to the Ukrainian Academy of Arts and then served as a Museum of Revolution until 1938.
The museum displays actual objects used in Ukrainian classrooms over the centuries, from handwritten copybooks to early printed textbooks. Walking through the rooms gives a concrete sense of what a school day looked like for children in different parts of the country.
The museum sits in the heart of Kyiv, making it easy to combine with other nearby sites along Volodymyrska Street. A morning visit tends to be quieter and gives you more time to look at the objects without rushing.
Among the collections are materials from 15th-century Ukrainian collegiums, including ancient dictionaries and manuscripts that rank among the oldest surviving records of organized schooling in the region. Few visitors expect to find objects this old in a museum focused on education rather than general history.
