Maksymovych Scientific Library

The Maksymovych Scientific Library is a major research library at Taras Shevchenko National University housing millions of books and documents in many languages. It provides extensive resources for students and researchers with modern study areas and electronic databases.

Founded in 1834 with a large book collection, it became a center of academic knowledge at the young university. The library suffered damage during World War II but was reopened and has served the institution continuously since then.

The library holds rare manuscripts and historical prints, including works in Latin, Hebrew, and Old Bulgarian that reflect the place's long intellectual tradition. Walking through its rooms, you notice how these collections show the diverse scholarly interests that shaped the institution.

The building has separate sections for different collections and a system designed to help visitors find needed materials quickly. Best to check opening hours in advance and bring valid identification if you want access as a visitor.

The collection includes rare early prints, among them an edition of a classical Roman text by Suetonius from the late 1400s and a Venetian prayer book from the early 1500s. These valuable pieces show how far the library reached to gather its sources.
