Red University Building, Educational building in downtown Kyiv, Ukraine.
The Red University Building is a four-story structure along Volodymyrska Street that encloses a large interior courtyard. An eight-columned portico marks the eastern entrance, and the building stretches approximately 145 meters along the street.
Italian architect Vincent Beretti designed this structure between 1837 and 1843 in late Russian Classicism style. It was built as the main building of the Imperial University and became central to Kyiv's educational identity.
The black and red exterior recalls the Order of Saint Vladimir, whose ideals shaped the institution's identity. These colors remain visible across the facade and are deeply connected to how locals view this educational landmark.
Visitors reach the portico through wide stairs on the eastern side, with accessibility ramps positioned on both sides for easier entry. The large courtyard inside helps with navigation and provides open space when the building is busy.
This building appears on the Ukrainian 100 hryvnias banknote, making it one of the country's most recognizable structures. During the 2022 conflict, a rocket struck nearby but the building remained standing, reinforcing its status as a national symbol.
