Yampil, Urban settlement in Lyman Raion, Ukraine.
Yampil is an urban-type settlement in Donetsk Oblast, eastern Ukraine, situated on higher ground above a river valley. The settlement has a railway station that connects it to the regional rail network, along with a school and basic local services.
The settlement was founded in 1665 on land belonging to Sviatohirsk Lavra monastery, with Cossack groups providing defence. Repeated flooding forced the community to move to higher ground in 1718, establishing the site where the settlement stands today.
The Mykolaiv Church is the most visible building in the settlement and draws residents together on religious holidays and Sundays. Orthodox traditions remain a natural part of daily life here, shaping the rhythm of the week for many families.
The settlement is compact enough to explore on foot, with the main points of interest within a short walk of each other. The railway station is a good starting point for getting oriented when you arrive.
The original site of the settlement, abandoned after the 1718 move, was already being called Old Village by 1729. This informal name survived in local use for generations, preserving the memory of a place most visitors never know existed.
