Tsetsyno Fortress, Medieval fortress ruins in Chernivtsi, Ukraine
Tsetsyno Fortress consists of ruins perched at approximately 540 meters on Tsetsyno Mountain, overlooking the western edge of Chernivtsi. A television tower erected in 1961 now stands on the site, rising above the hillside and visible from surrounding areas.
The fortress was originally built by Galician princes and later became strategically important under Moldavian ruler Peter I Musat in the late 14th century. Its position helped control trade routes passing through the region during that era.
The fortress carries different names across languages, reflecting the region's diverse past. In German it is known as Festung Zezyno, in Romanian as Cetatea Țețina, and in Ukrainian as Цецинська фортеця.
The location is accessible via routes connecting Chernivtsi to major Ukrainian cities like Kyiv and Odesa. Be prepared for a steep climb to reach the hilltop, particularly challenging during wet or snowy weather.
The surrounding Tsetsinsky landscape park shelters rare plant species including oak, beech, maple, and holly found nowhere else nearby. This makes the hillside an important refuge for regional wildlife and vegetation.
