Saint Anne Rotuna, Horiany

Saint Anne Rotuna, Horiany, Medieval rotunda in Horiany district, Uzhhorod, Ukraine.

Saint Anne Rotunda is a medieval round structure standing on a hilltop near palace ruins, with thick stone walls measuring about 2.5 meters across. The building still preserves frescoes and architectural details from the 14th and 15th centuries.

The structure was built during the reign of King Bela IV of Hungary, marking a period when the region fell under Hungarian rule. Its architecture bears traces of the changes that occurred across generations.

The building blends Byzantine and Gothic styles, reflecting the many religious influences that shaped this region over centuries. Visitors can see how different architectural traditions came together in a single structure.

The site sits about 3 kilometers east of Uzhhorod's center at Museiny Lane 6 and remains accessible for architectural and religious visits. The hilltop location requires a somewhat steep climb, so visitors should wear comfortable shoes.

Among Ukrainian religious buildings, this hexagonal rotunda shares architectural similarities with only two other structures, both located in Hungary. This likeness reveals how closely linked the architectural traditions of this region and Hungary once were.
