Херсонес Таврійський

Chersonesos Taurica is an archaeological museum and excavation site of an ancient Greek city on a peninsula near Sevastopol. The ruins of walls, temples, and houses spanning over 2000 years lie partly exposed and partly still buried in the ground.

The city was founded in the 5th century BC by Greek colonists and became an important trade port on the Black Sea for centuries. It was later controlled by Romans and Byzantines before being gradually abandoned.

The church and ruins show how Greek and Byzantine traditions lived side by side in this region for centuries. Visitors can see today how different periods left their marks in buildings and artifacts.

The site is very large and meant for walking, so wear comfortable shoes and plan to spend several hours there. There is a museum building with collections indoors and many ruins to explore outside in the open air.

The reason this place is revered relates to a pivotal religious event from medieval times that is remembered here. This spiritual connection ensured the location remained important to many people across the centuries.
